Tryouts for the fall 2019 season were held in February and March.  Some age groups still need players.  Please contact to inquire.

When are tryouts for the 2020 teams? Tryouts are typically held the end of February and early March at San Lorenzo Valley High School Turf Field. Each age group will hold two sessions, one week apart. Final age group schedules are posted when available.  All players are encouraged to attend both tryout sessions, if possible.

What’s the difference between rec and comp?  Recreation soccer is open to all players regardless of experience or skill level.  Rec teams have a balance of both new and returning players. Competitive soccer is for enthusiastic, players who want to compete at a higher level. Teams are formed through open tryouts in age groups from Under-9 Development to Under-19 and includes nearly 300 players each season.  All teams play a fall season, some teams also play in the spring.

Is tryout pre-register required? Onsite registration is available at tryouts. However, we encourage all participants to pre-registration before tryouts.  We will post a link in January when registration opens.  This allows us to plan for equipment and staff, and it streamlines the check-in process.  For on-site registration, a parent or legal guardian MUST attend tryouts and complete the necessary forms and waivers.  Registration is for contact information and birth year and does NOT ask for the specific time you expect to attend.

Who should attend tryouts? While a certain amount of skill and athletic ability is necessary to play comp soccer, all players with a desire and a love of the game are encouraged to tryout. Even if a player is not selected for this year’s advanced team, he/she gains valuable experience and is encouraged to keep playing and keep improving and to definitely tryout out again next year. Those players who work hard become better players.  New players join the program every year. All players must attend at least one tryout each year (i.e. there are no ‘carryover’ players) to make a team.

What happens at tryouts? Players are assigned a numbered jersey and will participate in drills and small-sided games. Players are evaluated by the head coach and independent qualified, local soccer players and coaches who are not affiliated with the team. The tryouts are conducted to be as fair and impartial to all players as possible.  All players attending tryouts should have and a light snack and some water 30 minutes before tryouts and provide their own water, soccer shoes and shin guards.

Can I play in a different age group?  The Club strongly recommends that players play in their age-appropriate bracket (where a team is available). If a player wants to playup, it is recommended the player tryout for their true age group in addition to the desired age group.  The player MUST tryout with the older age group to be offered a spot on that team.  Players cannot play down.

When does the season start? Similar to recreational soccer, the comp soccer season runs September to November. Teams typically practice 2 times per week and most teams start practices in July.  The season includes 8-10 games typically starting the weekend after Labor Day.

Where are games?  Teams play between 8-10 games which includes 4-5 home games played in Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley.   Away games are played in Santa Cruz County, the Greater Bay area, or Monterey County.
